Today, we’re exploring a part of the Reiki healing journey. Many people experience something often called a “Reiki hangover” or healing crisis. Despite the dramatic name, this Reiki healing symptom is not harmful. In truth, it’s one of the most powerful signs. Your body and energy field are adjusting. They are reaching a new level of balance, clarity, and energetic alignment.

In this gentle exploration, we’ll look at what a Reiki hangover is. We’ll examine why it happens and how it may feel. We’ll also explore how to support your Reiki aftercare with compassion. Toward the end, you’ll find a short grounding meditation. This meditation will help your energy settle. It will also integrate your energy after a Reiki session.

So let’s begin.

🌸 Reiki as a Path of Surrender and Allowing

Reiki energy healing is, at its essence, an act of surrender.
Surrender to energy flow.
Surrender to emotional release.
Surrender to the quiet intelligence of universal life force energy moving through and around you.

Reiki does not push into spaces where it isn’t welcome.
It does not force or override your personal energetic boundaries.
It does not bring in anything harmful.

Instead, Reiki gently encourages your body to let go of what no longer serves you. This includes old tension, stagnant emotions, and blocked energy. It also involves outdated patterns and the emotional baggage we often carry long after experiences have passed.

Reiki does not “fix” you, because you are not broken.
It simply reminds your system of what balance feels like.
It guides your body back toward harmony, supporting the natural healing wisdom already within you.

🌿 How Reiki Moves Through the Chakras

As Reiki energy flows, it naturally interacts with the chakra system. These are the seven main energy centers. They influence emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.

Each chakra responds uniquely:

  • Root Chakra: grounding, safety, stability
  • Sacral Chakra: creativity, emotional release, joy
  • Solar Plexus Chakra: empowerment, self-worth, confidence
  • Heart Chakra: compassion, forgiveness, openness
  • Throat Chakra: truth, expression, boundaries
  • Third Eye Chakra: clarity, intuition, inner vision
  • Crown Chakra: spiritual connection, higher guidance

As these energetic centers begin to rebalance, old emotional “debris” can rise to the surface. This is not to overwhelm you, but to leave your system. This rising is often what people label as a Reiki hangover or healing crisis.

🌼 A Moment From a Reiki Healing Event

Recently, I offered free 15-minute Reiki sessions at a wellness event held inside a softly glowing salt room. People came in with different expectations — curiosity, skepticism, and everything in between.

Before each Reiki session, I said the same gentle words:

“You don’t need to do anything.
Just breathe.
Just rest.
The Reiki energy knows exactly where it needs to go.”

No matter how skeptical someone was, every single person felt the warmth in my hands.
They always asked, “Where does the heat come from?”

And I always smiled and said,
“It comes through me, not from me. I’m just the Reiki energy channel.”

There are no tricks, no theatrics — only openness and willingness to receive Reiki healing energy.

💛 What Is a Reiki Hangover?

A Reiki hangover is also known as a healing crisis. It is simply your body adjusting to the energetic shifts that happened during your Reiki session. As stagnant energy loosens and begins to clear, you may feel changes physically, emotionally, or energetically.

Common Reiki hangover symptoms include:

  • Feeling tired or needing extra rest
  • Mild headaches
  • Emotional sensitivity or mood swings
  • Unexpected tears or emotional release
  • Vivid, meaningful dreams
  • Feeling spacey or deeply introspective
  • A strong need for water
  • A subtle sense of “something shifting” within

This is not a setback or problem.
This is release and renewal.

Just like stirring sediment in a pond, Reiki stirs what is ready to rise. It allows for the release of what needs to be let go. What comes up afterward is simply what your energy field is ready to let go of.

Your body, mind, and spirit are recalibrating in real time.

🌱 Reiki Aftercare: How to Support Yourself After a Session

The hours and days after Reiki energy healing are sacred integration time.

The Reiki energy continues working long after your session ends, so it’s essential to be gentle and compassionate with yourself. Here are some Reiki aftercare tips:

🌿 Drink plenty of purified water to help flush energetic toxins
🌿 Rest more than usual to support your nervous system
🌿 Move slowly and mindfully to stay grounded
🌿 Avoid overstimulation from screens, loud noises, or busy environments
🌿 Allow your emotions to flow naturally without judgment
🌿 Practice grounding techniques such as barefoot walking or breathing exercises
🌿 Give yourself permission to simply be and honor your healing process

Even if you didn’t “feel” anything during your Reiki session, your energy still shifted. Your whole system is clearing, reorganizing, and realigning to its natural, vibrant state.

Now, let’s soften into a grounding meditation to help you integrate Reiki energy and restore calm.

🌿 5-Minute Grounding Meditation: Strength & Centering

Welcome back, dear one.

Take a slow breath in through your nose…
and a soft exhale through your mouth.

Let your body settle.
Let your shoulders drop.
Let your mind arrive.

Bring your awareness to the base of your body — where you connect to the earth.

Imagine drawing healing, grounding energy up from the earth on your next inhale.
Feel it rise through your feet, legs, hips, torso, all the way to the crown of your head.

As you exhale, imagine the breath flowing back down, returning gently into the earth.

If your mind wanders, that’s perfectly okay.
Notice it gently and return to your breath.

Inhale — rising like a warm wave.
Exhale — falling like a soft release.

Feel your belly and ribs expand with each inhale…
and soften with each exhale.

Allow your breath to find its own natural rhythm — rising… falling… rising… falling.

Pause gently at the top of your inhale, then exhale fully, returning your energy to the earth.

Fill the places in your body that feel tired or heavy.
Exhale stress, tension, and worry.

Feel calm expand inside you — a quiet strength awakening.

Rest here for a few more breaths…

When you’re ready, bring your awareness back to your body.

Notice the support beneath you, your posture.

Wiggle your fingers and toes.
Roll your shoulders.
Sway your head softly.

Offer yourself gratitude for showing up, for healing, for presence.

When it feels right, softly open your eyes.

You are grounded.
You are supported.
You are whole.
